Great X Spectations

Every racer dreams of lining up at an event like the Winter X Games. For Colton Sturm it was no different, but probably not something that would ever happen. The former WSA Sport, Semi-Pro and Pro Hillcross Champion hit his peak about the same time his event disappeared from the bright lights of Aspen.

The years that followed were tough ones as Colton’s father Randy, a fixture on the oval racing scene throughout the 70’s, was diagnosed with cancer that was beating him down worse than any on track competitor ever dared. At one point the prognosis was nothing short of terminal and then came a glimmer of hope with what was classified as remission that just might put him in the clear.

Recently, the outlook has dipped and while Randy is continuing his fight, he knows there are no guarantees. What has been a wonder drug of sorts, is the return of Hillcross to Winter X and the “just maybe” chance that he and Colton could race one more time as a team, on the biggest of stages. Thanks in part to some discussion on the FXR Full Throttle podcast and the outpouring of support from the snowmobile racing community and local businesses, the Sturm’s have been given, at the very least, a ticket to the upcoming Hillcross qualifier in Crested Butte, and the chance to showcase their story and talents to the world.

In just a few short weeks, the duo have assembled what amounts to a hand-built Ski-Doo Summit with an X-RS front end, custom skid, FOX Shocks and Aerocharger turbo. With no snow or elevation in the Midwest, the Sturms will leave next week for Crested Butte where they plan to test and train right up until the qualifier.

What a inspiration you two are. (Atleast to me). I wish you the best of luck. It’s what I try to teach my kids that if you want it bad enough it is worth every thing to try it. Best wishes on the illness and then best wishes on your adventure. Stay safe, strong, and positive. BELIEVE=ACHIEVE
