COR PowerSports Update

Travis Faust1

As this winter continues to struggle there is changes coming in the future, and that change is not snow unfortunately but there is good news and unfortunately bad news…

Good news first: two weeks out is the scheduled Rd 1 and Rd 2 of the 2016 Cor PowerSports xc series at Birch Island Resort in Phillips, WI. We have been having teleconference meetings with Dan Virnig twice a week and they have been averaging 1/2” ice growth per day and with minimal snow on the lake currently it is fully expected to be well over a foot of ice by race weekend!

Bad news: We spoke yesterday morning with Rick at Carlson Rustic Ridge and Castle Rock lake which is to be the venue for Rd 3 just this Sunday got a layer of ice over the lake. With the event only 3 weeks away we discussed with Rick and Jayne from Northern Bay Condos and with looking at the forecast the decision was unanimous that having substantial gains in the ice thickness would not be likely in time for the event. In the best interest of the safety of the racers the event will be moved to a new venue for that same weekend.

We had been working on identifying a replacement venue already for the Jan 9/10 rescheduling so this just added to the concerns of getting all 6 advertised races in this season.

We will be planning to return to Birch Island Resort in Phillips, WI for a doubleheader event Jan 30 and 31 to make up two of the rescheduled rounds. If conditions after the Jan 23/24 weekend and it is deemed unsafe to hold another race on Wilson Flowage we will make up these rounds at a future event.

Blackjack Resort is scheduled to be Rd 2 of our new MESC race series and after discussions with all four snowmobile manufacturers we will be having the Terrain X portion of this event as Rd 6 of the Cor PowerSports XC race series. XC contingency dollars from the manufacturers will apply to the Terrain X event that weekend in the applicable classes. Blackjack has hosted national caliber events in the past so combining the two series for this one event will not be a problem. They have ample pit parking, spectator areas, and with it being a ski resort they are spending all winter preparing to ensure we have adequate snow for our event.
