Race Recap – D23 Hare Scramble Staples, MN

Checkpointx300By Susan Voss

With only two races left for the District 23 Hare-Scramble series, racers headed to Motocity Raceway in Staples, Minnesota. With a mixture of tight trails and motocross track, being a versatile rider was the key to success.

This season has been full of battles between Jayme French (51) and Isaac Newport (12). Currently, French leads both the Youth Premier class as well as the Junior C class. Newport trails only 10 points behind French in the Premier class, and 35 points behind in Junior C. This weekend, the two hit the track in the morning for the Premier race. French got ahold of the early lead and never looked back. After coming into scoring at 59 minutes and 42 seconds, French headed out for his fifth and final lap. Newport came into scoring two minutes and 27 seconds after the cutoff, which allowed French to secure his win. During the Junior C afternoon race, French once again finished first with Newport finishing just over one minute behind him.

One of the most dominating racers of the series this year is Miranda Tweeton. After a Girls 9-15 class championship in 2013, she is working towards her first Women’s championship. So far this season her worst finish has been a third, with the rest of her races being wins. On top of winning the Women’s class by almost five minutes, Tweeton finished 16th place overall out of almost 100 racers.

This year in the AA class, only one rider has won more than twice. Fresh off a championship in the 250 A/B Allstar at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch, Jerry Robin competed in his third Hare-Scramble of the year, claiming his third AA win of the season. Even after having surgery on both wrists in June, he has proven that the operation has not set him back at all. After every lap, Robin’s gap over the rest of his class grew. At the checkered flag, Robin beat second place Nick Swenson by a hair short of seven minutes.

With two races left, every finish and every point is becoming more crucial. Kyle Nelson currently sits first in the AA class with only seven points separating him from Nick Swenson. Behind Swenson sits Matt Stavish, who has Tyler Pogreba, Logan Kittock, Craig Holasek, and Matt Lindeberg sitting within 12 points of him.

Next weekend racing resumes at Trollhaugen Ski Resort in Dresser, Wisconsin.

Bailey McCarthy takes the holeshot in the 200 B class where he would end up with a fourth place. Brock Graif (113) finished first in the class and finished second overall in the combined B classes.

Jayme French won the Premier class last year and this year he is close to doing it again, along with the Junior C class. As long as French can stay consistent the last two races, his odds are looking pretty good.
